Claim Example #1 — Henry
What happened: Henry was crossing the road at a set of traffic lights when a car went through a red light and hit him at an estimated 50 km/h. Police and an ambulance attended, and he was taken to hospital by ambulance. The driver had a dash cam, and the crash is now the subject of a major investigation.

Claim Example #2 — Norman
What happened: Norman had to unload a large 5ft by 5ft pallet of rubbish from his work ute at the dump. Bars on the back of the ute meant it couldn't come off normally, and the dump staff wouldn't let him use a forklift or other mechanical lifting, so he had to pull it off the side of the tray and flip it over by hand, injuring his back. His job regularly involved heavy lifting, like 30 kg batteries, and climbing cranes. After surgery and rehabilitation he went back on light duties doing 5-hour shifts, but was in pain after every shift, and a later MRI showed scarring from the surgery was affecting the sciatic nerve down his right leg. He can no longer ride his motorbike, can't ride his bicycle without pain and has given up mountain hiking.

What happened: Daniela was a passenger in a car driven by a work colleague as they headed home from work. Claim Example #4 — Julia
What happened: Julia works in a dementia unit, and while she was showering a male patient he kept throwing himself down, injuring her hand and wrist. The patient's behaviour was known at her workplace but had never been documented, and she says staff in the ward regularly deal with violent patients. She was put on light duties and cleared to return to full duties about four months later, but only with a brace. Her wrist now gives way easily, she struggles to carry food trays and roll patients in bed, and she can no longer do the things she loves on her farm, like fencing, riding her motorbike, driving the tractor and looking after her livestock. She later fell on her property when her wrist couldn't hold a light load, injuring her knee and fracturing her femur.

Claim Example #5 — Grace
What happened: Grace was driving with her daughter as a passenger and waiting to turn left at a set of traffic lights at a busy Logan intersection. When the green arrow and green light came on, she followed the car in front through the turn at about 20 km/h. A truck on the cross road was travelling very fast and, even though its lights had turned red, crashed into the right side of her car. She now has ongoing back, shoulder, chest and head pain, and is scared to drive.

Claim Example #6 — Adrian
What happened: Adrian was physically attacked at work by a student on several occasions, being kicked and punched when the student lashed out. He reported the first incident and tried to limit his contact with the student, but the student stayed in his classroom and nothing was done. Even after he saw a doctor, he was still required to work in that classroom for another four weeks, and the student had similar issues with other staff. His knee injury means he can't drive his manual car, leaving him without transport to get to work and appointments.

Claim Example #7 — Nathaniel
What happened: Nathaniel was hand-loading a delivery truck at his workplace's loading bay when he had to lift a box of around 35 to 40 kg up to the driver standing in the back of the truck. As he pushed it up with his right arm, his shoulder popped. There was a forklift on site, but nobody held a forklift licence at the time, so all loading was done by hand and he was lifting alone. Since his injury, every bulk pick-up is stacked on pallets and loaded by forklift or pallet jack. He needed time off after surgery, moved into an office-only role and now works four days a week instead of five.

Claim Example #8 — Christian
What happened: Christian was riding a bicycle straight through a two-lane roundabout in the outside lane, with right of way, when a car entering from the left came into the outside lane without seeing him and crashed into him. He saved the driver's licence and car details on his phone. Ambulance officers arrived within minutes, but in shock he rode away instead of going with them. Months later he has had to go back to riding a bike after his car broke down, and is finding it hard because of the trauma of the crash.

What happened: Michele was driving to work along Anzac Avenue towards Redcliffe when the lights turned orange and she stopped. What happened: Emma was caught up in a multi-car pile-up on the Ipswich highway. Two cars collided in front of her and she managed to stop without hitting them, but the car behind slammed into the back of her, possibly twice, after it was hit by another vehicle. Claim Example #11 — Ian
What happened: Ian and two co-workers were left to run a concrete pour that is normally an eight-person job, because the usual crew was away and managers still scheduled it. By about 3:20pm he had been working since 5am without a break. While using a grinder to cut off a cross-threaded bolt, the blade caught and kicked back towards him, cutting his left thumb through to the bone. He spent three days in hospital and needed surgery to repair the tendon and pin the bone.
