Who can enrol

You can usually enrol if you live in Australia and you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident, or you have applied for permanent residency. Some temporary visa holders can also enrol.

To enrol for the first time, use the Medicare enrolment form (MS004). Some people can enrol online with a current passport or ImmiCard.

Getting your Medicare card

After you enrol, Services Australia sends your Medicare card by post. If you lose your card, you can ask for a new one online or by phone.

Medicare program line: 132 011. Tell them if you need an interpreter. They will arrange one for free.

Claiming money back

Many doctors send the claim to Medicare for you. If you paid the full fee, you can claim the Medicare benefit yourself.

  • Sign in to myGov and open your Medicare online account.
  • Choose 'Make a claim'.
  • Enter the service details and upload your invoice or receipt.
  • Check that your bank details are correct.

Setting up myGov and linking Medicare

  • Go to my.gov.au and create a myGov account. You need an email address and a mobile phone.
  • Sign in and choose 'View and link services'.
  • Choose Medicare. Use your Medicare card details, a linking code, or your Digital ID.

For help with myGov or linking, call the online services support line on 132 307.
